Tour overview
Cu Lao Cham is a cluster of eight islands off the mouth of the Thu Bon river, close enough to see from Cua Dai beach on a clear morning and far enough out that the water turns properly blue on the way. UNESCO listed the islands together with the Hoi An estuary as a World Biosphere Reserve in May 2009, and the reef around them is a protected marine park rather than open water.
The honest part first: this is a seasonal day. The sea off Hoi An is usually calm and clear from March through August, which is when the crossing is easy and the snorkelling is worth the trip. From roughly October to January the northeast monsoon puts real weather on the water and the harbour is often closed to passenger boats for days at a time. Tom will not sell you a crossing the sea is going to refuse — he watches the forecast and moves your date rather than sailing into it.
The day itself is less a schedule than a shape. A speedboat out from Cua Dai harbour, a couple of hours in the water over coral shallow enough to stand up in, a long lunch of whatever the boats brought in that morning, and an afternoon you can spend swimming, walking the village lanes, or lying under a casuarina tree doing nothing at all. Because the boat is private, the shape bends: more time in the water, more time in the village, a later start home.
One thing that catches people out: the islands are plastic-free. Cu Lao Cham banned single-use plastic bags in 2009 and the ban has held ever since, so you will be asked to leave bags on the mainland. Bring a refillable bottle instead. It is a small rule, and it tells you a good deal about how the island thinks about itself.

Highlights
Bai Chong beach
A short curve of white sand with shade at the back of it and water that shelves gently away. This is the beach the day is built around, not a photo stop on the way to somewhere else.
Snorkelling the shallow reef
Coral gardens in roughly one to three metres of water — shallow enough that you float over them rather than dive down. Mask, snorkel and life jacket come with the boat, and non-swimmers stay in a jacket the whole time.
The fishing village
Bai Lang, where the islanders actually live: a small market, two or three lanes, squid drying on racks in the sun, and boats pulled up wherever there is room for them.
Lunch off the morning boats
Fish, squid and whatever else came in that morning, cooked simply at a beachside kitchen and eaten in the shade. Tell Tom when you book if you need it vegetarian and the kitchen cooks around it.

Speedboat across
About half an hour on the water. It is bumpy whenever there is any swell, and the colour of the sea changes about halfway over — that is the point at which people stop holding the rail and start taking photographs.

Ashore at the beach, with the rest of the morning yours: swim, sit in the shade, or walk the sand to the end and back before the water gets busy.

Snorkelling over the coral
Out to the reef with a guide. The water is one to three metres deep, so you drift on the surface and look down rather than diving. Everyone wears a life jacket, which makes this the easiest snorkelling most people ever do.

Frequently asked questions
Is this tour suitable for children?+
Yes, from about six years old. Life jackets come with the boat and the snorkelling water is only one to three metres deep, so a child who is happy floating in a jacket is fine. Below that age it is the half-hour speedboat crossing that is the problem, not the swimming.
What should I bring?+
Swimsuit, towel, hat, sunglasses, reef-safe sunscreen and some cash for the village. Leave plastic bags at the hotel — the island does not allow them — and bring a refillable bottle instead.
What if the weather is bad?+
The boat only sails when the sea is safe, so a storm moves the day rather than cancelling your holiday. Tom watches the forecast and tells you as early as he can, so you can pick another date or swap to a tour on land.
Can I change the itinerary?+
Yes. It is your boat and your day, so the times above are a shape rather than a schedule — longer in the water, longer in the village, a later start home. Tell Tom when you book.
Which months does the boat actually run?+
March to August is the reliable window: calm sea, clear water, easy crossing. September is a maybe. From October to January the northeast monsoon takes over and Cua Dai harbour is often closed to passenger boats, so Tom will usually point you at a day on land rather than sell you a crossing that gets cancelled.
Will I get seasick?+
The crossing is about thirty minutes in a speedboat and it slams a bit whenever there is swell. If you know you are prone to it, take something an hour before pickup rather than once you are on the water.
Do I need to be able to swim?+
No. Everyone is in a life jacket, the reef is shallow, and plenty of guests spend the whole snorkelling stop floating face-down on the surface without once putting a foot down.
Can we stay overnight on the island?+
Not on this tour — it comes back the same afternoon. There are homestays in Bai Lang if a night out there appeals; tell Tom and he will plan it as a different trip rather than stretch this one.
