Tour overview
Hue was the capital of Vietnam from 1802 to 1945, and the Nguyen emperors left behind a walled palace city, a line of tombs along the Perfume River and a skyline of tiled roofs that UNESCO listed in 1993. It sits about 120 kilometres north of Hoi An, and that distance is the whole argument for a private car: you spend the driving hours looking out of the window instead of waiting at the roadside for a coach to fill up.
The way out goes over the Hai Van Pass rather than through the tunnel underneath it. The road climbs to 490 metres and stops at Hai Van Quan, the old Nguyen gate on the boundary between Da Nang and Hue, with Lang Co lagoon opening to the north and the Son Tra peninsula behind you. The gate reopened in August 2024 after a two-year restoration, so you can walk up onto the fort now instead of photographing it from the car park.
In Hue you walk the Imperial City: across the moat at Ngo Mon gate, through the Thai Hoa throne hall, past the Mandarin halls and out into the open ground where the Forbidden Purple City stood before the war took it. Kien Trung Palace, the last emperors' residence, was rebuilt from photographs and reopened in 2024 — the newest building inside the oldest walls in the country. Allow two to three kilometres of flat walking with very little shade.
The afternoon is one royal tomb and one pagoda. The tomb is usually Khai Dinh, eleven years in the building between 1920 and 1931, blackened concrete outside and a room of porcelain and glass mosaic within; it looks like nothing else in Vietnam. Thien Mu Pagoda closes the day on the bank of the Perfume River, with the seven-storey Phuoc Duyen tower in front and, in the garden behind, the blue Austin that carried Thich Quang Duc to Saigon in 1963.
You come home through the Hai Van Tunnel, which takes about forty minutes off the return leg. Door to door this is ten to twelve hours. It is the longest day Tom runs, and the one people are most often glad they did.

Lunch in Hue
A break in the city for bun bo Hue or com hen. Meals are not in the tour price, so you order what you want, and Tom points you at the places people in Hue actually eat rather than the tour-bus canteen.

Royal Tomb
One of the Nguyen tomb complexes outside the city, usually Khai Dinh: a steep flight of dragon stairs, a courtyard lined with stone mandarins, and an interior surfaced entirely in porcelain and glass mosaic. The tomb ticket is not in the tour price.

Thien Mu Pagoda
The pagoda on the rise above the Perfume River, with the Phuoc Duyen tower in front and the working monastery behind. Quiet at the end of a loud day, and the best river light of the afternoon.

Return via the tunnel
Home through the Hai Van Tunnel rather than back over the top, which saves about forty minutes when you want them most. Expect to reach your hotel ten to twelve hours after pickup.

Frequently asked questions
How far is Hue from Hoi An?+
About 120 kilometres, and 2.5 to 3 hours each way. The drive up goes over the Hai Van Pass, which is the slow and scenic way; the drive back uses the tunnel underneath it, which is the fast one.
Is it really a full day?+
Yes — plan for 10 to 12 hours door to door, with an early pickup. It is the longest day on the list, and there is no version of it that is short.
Is lunch included?+
No. Meals and drinks are yours, which keeps the tour price honest and lets you eat what you want. Tom will take you to a bun bo Hue place locals use.
Which tickets are included and which are not?+
The Imperial Citadel entrance is in your price. The royal tomb ticket is not — Khai Dinh is currently 150,000 VND per adult, paid at the gate. Hue reviews its monument prices, so Tom confirms the figure before you travel.
Which royal tomb do we visit?+
Usually Khai Dinh: the most unusual of them and the closest to the city, so it costs the least time. If you would rather see Minh Mang's gardens or Tu Duc's lake, say so when you book and Tom rearranges the afternoon.
Do we cross the pass in both directions?+
No, and that is deliberate. Over the top on the way out, while everyone is fresh and the light is good; through the tunnel on the way home, when what you want is to be back.
Can you actually go inside Hai Van Quan now?+
Yes. The gate reopened on 1 August 2024 after a two-year restoration funded jointly by Da Nang and Hue, and you can walk up onto the fort itself. Admission was free at reopening; Tom checks the current arrangement before each trip.
How much walking is there?+
The Citadel is the demanding part: two to three kilometres on flat stone with very little shade. Khai Dinh adds a steep set of stairs. Thien Mu is short and easy. Comfortable shoes and a hat matter more here than fitness does.
